New public toilets planned for Portobello Promenade by spring 2027

Plans for new public toilets at Straiton Place Park (also known as the Pirate Park), are being brought forward, with the aim of having the facilities open in spring 2027.

The provision of additional public toilets has been consistently raised by residents and visitors to Portobello, particularly around Straiton Place, where temporary toilets are currently located. Bringing forward the delivery of the new facilities as part of the Portobello Promenade project will help address this need sooner than originally planned.

Shaping facilities around community needs

We want the new public toilets to be welcoming, safe, clean and accessible, and meeting the needs of all users.

The proposed facilities will include a Changing Places toilet, which offers larger, fully equipped accessible space for people with more complex needs. We are continuing to engage with local organisations to better understand the needs of the community and explore what the new facilities could include.

The exact location of the toilets within Straiton Place Park will be confirmed following further feasibility assessments.

Have your say

Community feedback will help inform the design of the new toilets and improvements to the surrounding park and play facilities. To support the earlier delivery of the toilets, engagement activities are being brought forward, with opportunities to get involved taking place this autumn.

Residents and visitors are invited to share their ideas and suggestions via our Padlet page.
