Leith Links Public Toilets: May Update

Public toilets in Leith Links

We are currently progressing essential remediation works to address issues identified within the drainage network serving the public toilets at Leith Links.

Programme and timeline

Works have begun on site, and are expected to take approximately 15–20 days. These will be followed by reinstatement works and post-construction activities, including CCTV survey inspections and snagging.

We are currently aiming to reopen the public toilets in early June 2026, subject to final testing and operational checks.

Temporary chemical toilets remain in place and will continue to be serviced regularly by our Facilities Management team until the permanent facilities can safely reopen. For any enquiries, please contact: public.conveniences@edinburgh.gov.uk.

Background

The Leith Links public toilets were temporarily closed in December 2025 following the identification of issues affecting the drainage network. Investigations found that the service disruption was caused by a combination of factors, including:

  • Foreign objects being disposed of into the system, impacting normal operation
  • A construction-related fault within the drainage network, which requires remediation to ensure reliable long-term performance

The Council has since been working closely with its contractor to review the drainage design and identify a robust solution that addresses both issues.

Key milestones

December 2025: Temporary closure following identification of a faulty drainage system caused by foreign objects entering the network and a construction fault affecting system performance.

January 2026: Toilets’ contractor Healthmatic appointed a specialist drainage sub-consultant to review the network and develop a remediation design solution.

February 2026: Development and technical assessment of drainage design options.

March 2026: Drainage design solution reviewed and approved from a technical and operational perspective.

April 2026: Healthmatic appointed a specialist sub-contractor to carry out remediation works and preparation of construction programme.

May 2026: Planned mobilisation on site and implementation of drainage remediation works.

Estimated reopening: Targeting reopening shortly after completion of works and post-construction verification checks, currently forecasted at the beginning of June 2026.

Ongoing arrangements

We recognise the inconvenience caused by the temporary closure and appreciate the patience of park users and the local community. Temporary facilities have been provided during this period to maintain provision while the permanent solution is being progressed.

We are working closely with our contractor Healthmatic to ensure the drainage network is reliable and resilient, and we look forward to bringing the new public toilets back into operation as soon as possible.

Further updates will be provided as works progress.
