Delivering Public Toilets Across Edinburgh’s Parks and Waterfront – May 2025 Update

We are pleased to share the latest update on our ongoing work to deliver four new public toilet facilities across Edinburgh in The Meadows, Inverleith Park, Leith Links, and Hawes Pier in Queensferry.

These projects represent a major step forward in our mission to make green spaces and popular destinations more inclusive, accessible, and welcoming for all.

Our teams, contractors, and partners have made significant progress over the past few weeks:

  • The Meadows: Utilities connections are now completed. The resin-bound landscape surfacing is nearly finished, and boardwalk installation is progressing well with completion expected this week.

  • Inverleith Park: A new GRP unit has been installed, and final connections are underway. We have resolved earlier issues locating the water main and expect the electricity connection to be finalised in the coming fortnight.

  • Leith Links: The toilet module was delivered and installed on 7 May. This required complex coordination, especially around access and existing trees. We are grateful to our operational teams for their continued support.

  • Queensferry (Hawes Pier): following a constructive meeting with Scottish Water on Wednesday 14th May, we have now received formal approval to move ahead with a new sewer connection, approximately 7 meters further away from the originally planned combined sewage pipeline.

Estimated Opening Timeline

We remain on track to deliver all four toilet facilities ahead of the busy summer season. While some site elements like street furniture may arrive slightly later due to supplier lead times, we are prioritising safe and functional openings at all locations:

  • The Meadows – Operational by early June

  • Inverleith Park – Operational by mid to late June

  • Leith Links – Operational by mid-June

  • Queensferry (Hawes Pier) – Operational by mid-June

Managing Delivery with Flexibility

In response to challenges such as infrastructure delays and utility connections, we are implementing a Phased Opening Plan. This allows us to open each site as soon as it becomes operational – even if some finishing elements arrive later. This approach ensures we can meet public need during peak periods, especially with key summer events approaching.

Thank You
